Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing/Kickboxing, is a centuries-old combat sport and the cultural martial art of Thailand. Trained in the “art of eight limbs,” a Muay Thai fighter is able to use eight points of contact – fists, elbows, knees, and feet – to devastate his opponent.
Muay Thai originated as a form of hand-to-hand military combat used by migratory tribes in Southeast Asia, chiefly the Siamese (Thai). In this combat style, the fighter uses his body the way a warrior uses a weapon: fists move like swords, elbows like maces, and knees like axes, and, hardened through training, shins protect like armor. Beloved as a competitive sport by Thai kings, modern Muay Thai was popularized in the 19th century and standardized in the early 20th century; today, it is a cultural institution in Thailand, with Muay Thai training camps all over the country. Outside of Thailand, Muay Thai is recognized as a devastatingly efficient fight style and is the stand-up style of choice of many MMA fighters.
Muay Thai for Adults
Beaufort MMA’s Muay Thai training program includes classes for all skill levels. In our adult beginner classes, you will learn the fundamentals of Muay Thai, including how to move your stance, strike and kick, and effectively defend and counter. Since Muay Thai requires fast movements of the fists, elbows, knees, and feet, Beaufort MMA’s beginner classes are a full-body cardio workout and a great choice if you are looking to get in shape or further develop your strength and cardio. In our adult intermediate and advanced classes, you will learn how to use Muay Thai striking and clinching techniques for maximum impact against an opponent. The techniques taught in our intermediate and advanced classes translate well for boxers and MMA competitors alike and are great training if you are interested in competing in MMA, International Kickboxing Federation (I.K.F.), or World Kickboxing Association (W.K.A.) tournaments.
Muay Thai for Children
Beaufort MMA also offers Muay Thai youth classes, where your child will learn the fundamentals of the martial art, burning off energy as he or she learns the core movements and then practices them on the heavy bags and pads held by the instructor. Our youth classes focus not only on the physical aspects of Muay Thai but also the history and traditions surrounding it. By learning about Muay Thai traditions such as the “wai khru” (the pre-fight ceremonial dance) and getting to try on Muay Thai mongkols and prajiets (woven headbands and armbands traditionally worn by Muay Thai fighters), your child will have the opportunity to develop an awareness and appreciation of another culture, all while getting fit.
Whether you’re a beginner looking to improve your strength and cardio or an experienced MMA competitor looking to devastate in the ring, Beaufort MMA has a Muay Thai class that is right for you! Check out a free trial class or contact us to schedule a private session with our Kru!
